Everyone loves to have a nicely manicured lawn, but sometimes the cost can be burdensome. Luckily the city of Denver helps out with that on a couple of fronts with their compost and mulch program. With free mulch and deeply discounted compost, the service helps the whole community. The Sloan’s Lake location makes it an easy jaunt from anywhere in the Highlands to get some good, homegrown mulch and compost.
The free mulch portion of this service begins with the pick-up of out-of-season Christmas trees, chips those trees, and distributes them to the sites around town. The Highlands location is a dig-your-own mulch site where you can fill up the bed of your truck for the cost of the work you put into it. If you feel like a bit of a drive or need more than you care to shovel into a vehicle, the Northeast location at the Havana Nursery has a front-end loader available for use. Whether you need to cover a couple of beds outside your bungalow or are looking to refurbish your entire yard, the city’s free mulch has got you covered.
The compost portion of the service is a result of the leaf pick-up the city does during the fall. $3 gets you a ten-gallon bag of homegrown dirt, while $30 will get you a cubic yard. There is a limit on how much you can buy, and it is done on a first-come first-serve basis, so make sure you get there early. While the mulch is available at a number of locations, the compost is only available at the Havana Nursery. Situated to the east of the neighborhood, the nursery is easily accessible from anywhere in the Highlands.
The service only comes around once a year, and this year it is May 7th. The weather should be just about perfect by then, so get out and meet some neighbors, share a glass of lemonade, and enjoy the fruits of the city’s recycling labors.
