Highlands Denver CO Real Estate – Compost and Mulch Program Update

Everyone loves to have a nicely manicured lawn, but sometimes the cost can be burdensome.  Luckily the city of Denver helps out with that on a couple of fronts with their compost and mulch program.  With free mulch and deeply discounted compost, the service helps the whole community.  The Sloan’s Lake location makes it an easy jaunt from anywhere in the Highlands to get some good, homegrown mulch and compost.

The free mulch portion of this service begins with the pick-up of out-of-season Christmas trees, chips those trees, and distributes them to the sites around town.  The Highlands location is a dig-your-own mulch site where you can fill up the bed of your truck for the cost of the work you put into it.  If you feel like a bit of a drive or need more than you care to shovel into a vehicle, the Northeast location at the Havana Nursery has a front-end loader available for use.  Whether you need to cover a couple of beds outside your bungalow or are looking to refurbish your entire yard, the city’s free mulch has got you covered.

The compost portion of the service is a result of the leaf pick-up the city does during the fall.  $3 gets you a ten-gallon bag of homegrown dirt, while $30 will get you a cubic yard.  There is a limit on how much you can buy, and it is done on a first-come first-serve basis, so make sure you get there early.  While the mulch is available at a number of locations, the compost is only available at the Havana Nursery.  Situated to the east of the neighborhood, the nursery is easily accessible from anywhere in the Highlands.

The service only comes around once a year, and this year it is May 7th.  The weather should be just about perfect by then, so get out and meet some neighbors, share a glass of lemonade, and enjoy the fruits of the city’s recycling labors.

I Love Highlands Denver CO – Where are the best patios in the Highlands?

Spring has sprung in Denver, which means summer is about two weeks away.  Summer in Denver is when Denverites really get into the full swing of the Denver Lifestyle, the reasons we all live here.  One of the things we seem to excel at is finding sunny patios with great specials and enjoying all that Denver has to offer.  From tucked away places on side streets to the rooftops that overlook the city, the Highlands is the spot to be when you want to kick back and relax.

Forest Room 5

2532 15th Street

The back patio of this Highlands hot spot makes you feel a little bit like you’re camping out instead of winding down from a long week.  With fire pits and cozy seating on the patio, it’s easy to curl up and chill out.  Occasional movie screenings make it feel like you have transported yourself to a whole different world, making this easily one of Denver’s best patios.

Vita

1575 Boulder Street, Suite 1

When it comes to views, the rooftop patio at Vita has the competition beat.  With a still unimpeded gaze, enjoy a glass of wine while you watch the sun coat the city in setting sunlight.  The delicious food they serve along with the amazing wine selection will make you wish summer would never end.

The Highland Tavern

3400 Navajo Street

Technically speaking, the patio of this bar is pretty limited on space, redeemed by the giant bay doors that open up the entire front of the restaurant and bar tucked into an unassuming part of the Highlands neighborhood.  If you don’t know what you’re looking for, it’d be easy to drive right past, but find it and you are welcomed to a true neighborhood bar.  A couple of years ago, the tavern gained a new chef and has been sending out some of the most scrumptious food in the Potter-Highlands has ever seen.

Highlands Garden Café

3927 W 32nd Street

It’d be a crime to leave out the Highlands Garden Café, despite its lack of nightlife.  Situated just up the street from the shops at 32nd and Lowell, this Highlands mainstay is rife with lush gardens to dine in.  Open Tuesday to Saturday for lunch and dinner, there are three separate patios and two porches you can dine on and enjoy the scenery.  The Highlands Garden Café inherited some of North Denver’s beautiful old growth trees and has spent well over a decade decorating with perennials and shrubs.

What is the Best Farmer’s Market in Northwest Denver?

What’s the best farmer’s market in Northwest Denver? Highlands, Denver CO Real Estate

One of the greatest things about the warm weather is the return of the farmer’s market.  It offers the neighborhood a chance to get together and support local producers, something the Highlands neighborhood is known for, and one of the reasons I love the Highlands neighborhood in general.  The Highland United Farmer’s Market takes place every Saturday along the 1500 block of Boulder Street, in front of Vita, Lola, and Shangri-La.  As the only member of the Denver Farmer’s Market family that lives in Northwest Denver, it lays host to some of the freshest, most delicious fruits, vegetables, and meats you can find in the city.  Running every Saturday from June to October starting at 9 am, grab a cup of fresh brewed coffee from the aforementioned Shangri-La or, if you’re lucky enough to get there on a day there is a coffee roaster, the freshest cup of coffee you can buy, and start wandering.  Farmers truck in fresh vegetable from places like Longmont and offer up crisp, delicious greens for a fraction of what they’d be at the grocery, but with a flavor punch that will leave you stunned.  If you catch one of the cattle farmers in town, they offer up all-natural grass fed beef and bison in large, but discounted, quantities.  Thinking about getting beef that healthy and delicious in the middle of Northwest Denver just makes my mouth water; it’s an epicurean delight, for sure.  If you happen to have stocked up the previous week and don’t need too much on the food front, check out the wares being hocked by local artisans.  You can find everything from recycled shopping bags (perfect for when you forget yours at home!) to hand carved silverware, and knowing you’re getting a one-of-a-kind good always makes you feel just a little more special.

Best Parks Near the Highlands Denver CO Real Estate
There are over 100 city parks in Denver, large and small alike.  The location of the Highlands, across from a massive park to the southeast, and close to the largest lake in Northwest Denver, is perfectly situated to enjoy whatever kind of park you are in the mood for!

Commons Park, Denver Skate Park, and City of Cuernavaca Par

Along the Platte River, between 15th and the train tracks near I-25

Quite possibly one of the coolest park complexes in Denver, this trio has a little bit of park for everyone.  Commons Park is the easiest to get to from Lower Highlands, just over the pedestrian bridge from the shops that line Platte Street.  Wide open space, gently rolling hills, and imposing, beautiful stone structures give you just enough of a city view to know where you are, but enough nature to keep you happy.  Keep moving east and you will hit the Denver Skate Park.  Lauded for its size, features, and ability to keep kids entertained until the lights go out at 11 pm, it truly is one of a kind, no doubt the best skate park in the state.  Just a bit further to the east, you have the City of Cuernavaca Park, where you’ll find mid-week kickball games and cookouts.  All three are connected with a stretch of the Cherry Creek Trail system, the best way to explore the city scenery from a bike.

Sloan’s Lake Park

Between Sheridan and Federal Blvds, 17th and 26th

Situated to the Southeast of Sheridan Boulevard, Sloan’s Lake Park is a beautiful reprieve from the bustling city mere miles away.  It is the only place in the city where you can water ski or wakeboard on a public lake.  At 177 acres, it is the second largest park in Denver, leaving plenty of space to grill out and throw the Frisbee around once you get back to shore.  The lake’s close proximity to the Highlands makes it one of the best park options for a little getaway, even if it’s just for the afternoon.

Jefferson Park

Between 22nd and 23rd, Eliot and Clay

When snow hits the Mile High City, but you can’t make it to the mountains, what’s the next best thing?  Sledding!  This park is primarily comprised of one giant hill, and when it snows, it’s heaven on a slick plastic saucer.  The various grades accommodate a variety of levels of daring, making it the best undiscovered park to take family and friends to when the white stuff blankets Denver.

The Highlands Neighborhood Denver CO Real Estate

The Highlands Neighborhood Denver CO Real Estate

At 250 acres, the Highlands neighborhood is Denver’s largest.  Bordered on the East by the Union Pacific Railroad lines, the West by 38th Avenue, the North by Federal Boulevard, and the Southeast by the Platte River, this eclectic and hip area is experiencing resurgence as the place to live in North Denver.

Founded in 1858 by William Larimer, the Highlands Neighborhood was originally a place for the wealthy to live, higher up on the hills where they could get great views of both Denver City and Auraria.  It was eventually incorporated into its own town in 1885 (a feat that lasted only eleven years before being annexed by Denver) and housed a relatively homogenous group of Protestants.  This homogeneity, however, was not to last.  Immigrants began to move to the Highlands and started to give it some of the flavor we still see today.  While the Highlands neighborhood is large, it is generally broken up into smaller sections with the main vein of business flowing on 32nd.  Centered around old tramway stops, 32nd boasts business and cultural hubs at Lowell, Tejon, Tennyson, Zuni, and Federal, all with their own unique flavor.

Lower Highlands, more affectionately referred to as LoHi, is the area closest to downtown Denver, comprised of the shops, restaurants, and houses along the Platte River up to the far side of I-25.  In recent years it has seen a host of new North Denver businesses decide to call it home and make it the newest hot spot for young Denverites.  LoHi generally has the more youthful populace of the Highlands neighborhood, as it is where most of the apartment living in the Highlands can be found, as well as a number of bars and new restaurants.

Moving further up into the Highlands you get to Highlands Square, the quintessential picture of Highlands living.  Situated around 32nd and Lowell, Highlands Square has little boutiques hocking handmade wares, amazing bistros that are withstanding the economy’s hardships, and beautiful bungalow houses that are perfect for a young couple or a new family that wants to stay close to the action of downtown.

Small enclaves of houses scattered throughout the Highlands are testament to the immigrant populations that have moved in over the years as well as the history the neighborhood holds.  From the winding streets of the Scottish Highlands to the Latin flavor of the Potter-Highlands, this North Denver neighborhood has something for everyone.
